Water Content Experiment
As part of our 'Liquid Gold' we carried out an experiment to see which of the five foods contained most water. We chose a cucumber, orange, apple, banana and tomato. Firstly we predicted the order of each food - which would contain the most, second most, etc. Then we weighed each piece of food to make sure we had a 100g sample of each. We laid the foods out in a cool, dry area and left them for a week. After 1 week the food samples looked quite different. We weighed each sample again and not surprisingly none of the samples weighed 100g anymore. Each sample had lost some water. We found that the food which had lost the most water was cucumber, next was orange, then tomato, next was banana and we were quite shocked that apple was the food that had lost the least amount of water. Most of our predictions weren't completely right but many were close. We used our knowledge of decomposition to find the weight loss of each food sample. We added our results to a table and used the table to draw a bar graph. This was a fun experiment and it allowed us to show off our mental Maths and Data Handling skills.
